Leaders from Kisumu led by opposition chief Raila Odinga's wife Ida Odinga have raised alarm over the rise in the number of defilement cases in the County.
The leaders who spoke to KTN News from Nyando constituency on Saturday said the rise in defilement cases is so alarming that the trend threatens the future of the girl child.
"In Kisumu alone, I have heard so many reports that they defile young children and then they murder them so that they hide the evidence," Ida said in an interview with KTN News.
"Even God in heaven will not forgive you for that. We want to ask the parents, we want to ask the schools, we want to ask the society and everybody in this community to be more vigilant so that the bad elements that are practicing this can be removed from the society."
Ida spoke four months after a senior chief in Seme sub-county was arraigned before the Maseno Law Courts after being accused of defiling a class seven girl.
On her part, Kisumu Nominated Senator Rose Nyamunga said: "We are going to be very vigilant with village policing and we are going to make sure that we expose all the people defiling young children and making their lives very difficult."
Senator Fred Outa warned young people who have taken advantage of the existence of illicit brews to commit crime that the law will soon catch up with them.
"This goes to the young people who have become victims of these illicit brews and as a result, we have seen more of our young girls being defiled," he said.
"This must be stopped and we as the leaders from this county will be watchful and we are going to make sure that we get rid of all illicit brews and take advantage of the East Africa Breweries product," he said.
Deputy Governor Ochieng' Owili said the county government will work round the clock to fight the rising cases of child molestation and unwanted pregnancies.
