Starehe Member of Parliament Charles Njagua alias Jaguar's latest proposal to reduce the retirement age for civil servants has elicited mixed reactions among Kenyans.
The legislator on Tuesday gave a notice of motion for the proposed that seeks to reduce the retirement age from 60 to 50 years.
According to the artist-turned politician, the move will see the rising unemployment rates and new pensioners reduced thereby giving the government room to plan for new retirement benefits scheme.
“The raising of the retirement age from 60 will reduce the increase of the number of new pensioners, it will give the government time to programme for resources to fund the new pension scheme and allow room for introduction and operationalisation of the public service scheme,” Jaguar was quoted by Capital FM.
The MP's proposal has elicited mixed reactions.
A section of Kenyans lauded him saying that it would help in a big way while others opined that his idea wasn't economically viable as the cost of sustaining pensions was the reason to why the government had pushed the retirement age limit to 60.
