The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has differed with their Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) counterpart over calls to arm teachers.
Kuppet national vice-chairperson Julius Korir had proposed that teachers be armed to protect them from indiscipline students after Peter Omare, a physics and computer studies teacher at Hopewell High School in Barut, Nakuru was allegedly killed by students for confiscating a phone from them.
Two students have already been arrested in connection to the brutal murder.
Speaking to the press in his Eldoret office on Monday, Chepkoilel KNUT secretary general Sammy Bor said arming teachers would not end indiscipline cases in schools.
“For me, I don’t buy into that idea in the sense that this is a societal issue that requires concerted efforts of everyone in the society to end the menace,” said Bor.
“If there is a problem with a tree you don’t just focus on the leaves but focus on the root cause, treat the roots and the roots the rest of the tree will be well,” he added.
The Knut official noted that issuance of guns to teachers was not a solution to the indiscipline problem but they should look for other ways such as enhancing discipline through values, talks, and guiding and counselling.
He further said that the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders should come together to end indiscipline cases in schools once and for all.
