Ngilu’s husband Michael Mwendwa Ngilu died in 2006 while undergoing treatment at Groote Schruur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa at the age of 63.

His demise was a big blow to the Ngilu's family.

Ngilu, who once served at the Central Bank of Kenya, stood strong to see her children become successful after the death of the man she described as her pillar of strength.

In a past interview, Ngilu revealed that she decided to fire, their 20-years family lawyer Peter Mwendwa after he allegedly tried to interfere with the family properties when her husband was critically ill.

Ngilu said the lawyer did not present the family with the will, which raised eyebrows.

“This man claims he wrote my husband’s will, yet we don’t know of any will left to us,” she said.

“He should bring the will to us, the family, if he has one," Ngilu added.

On his part, the lawyer claimed that the late husband never wanted Ngilu to succeed him.

Mwendwa said the late politician had promised to support another candidate to beat his wife in the contest.

“Mzee Ngilu had before his death promised to offer financial support to one of us to oppose his wife in this year’s elections,” one, Mwema Malonza, said.
