The then 35 year-old human rights lawyer was elected in a by-election held to replace former Ndhiwa MP Orwa Ojode, who had perished in a helicopter crash in June the same year.

Ojode, then Internal security Assistant Minister, died alongside his boss Professor George Saitoti.

Before he was elected to replace Orwa Ojode, Neto had to sail through a storm of accusations by ODM party diehards who accused him of being among a group of Civil Society activists who wanted a section of Presidential aspirants barred from contesting the 2013 Presidency on ethics and integrity grounds.

The aspirants included ODM party leader Raila Odinga, President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto.

Neto came out stronger from the accusations and retained his sat on an ODM ticket during the March 2013 general elections.

In April last year, the MP lost to newcomer Martin Peters Owino in the ODM party nominations.

Owino a former Homa Bay chief officer for Finance got 14, 005 votes against Neto’s 11,270 votes.

Neto defended his seat as an independent candidate in the August 8th general elections, and again lost to Owino.

Last month, President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Agostinho Neto a board member of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
