The Rongo Magistrate court in Migori County has sentenced a 19-year-old young man to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of defiling an 8-year-old girl.
While reading out the sentence, Rongo Principal Magistrate Raymond Lang’at said that the prosecution side proved beyond reasonable doubt that 19-year-old Julius Otieno committed the offence.
"Having carefully considered all the evidence and having heard the entire plea from witnesses and conducted proper investigations, the court is satisfied the crime warrants life imprisonment," ruled the magistrate as quoted by the Standard.
The Court was told that Julius Owino lured the child as she was going back home from School.
The Court heard that he dragged her to a nearby sugarcane plantation and carried out the unlawful act.
He was accused of committing the offence on June 21, last year at Kamreri village, in Migori County.
He has 14 days to launch an appeal against the sentence.
The sentence comes in the wake of an increase in the number of defilement cases in various places across the country.
