The Special Air Service (SAS) soldier who joined Kenya’s security apparatus and stormed the DusitD2 hotel-complex that was under attack is set to be feted.
The soldier, who has been recognized by many over his bravery, helped rescue many survivors during the attack by Al-Shabaab gunmen.
He was captured making commando-style moves at the premise together with other special team officers like the Recce squad.
Sources said the trooper was off-duty when he heard the gunshots and dashed to the scene.
He identified himself and went straight into the scene of intense gun fighting.
According to the Telegraph, the soldier will be feted soon.
“A well-placed source said the SAS man - understood to be a Senior Non-Commissioned Officer - will be recommended for one of the highest medals for gallantry and likely the George Cross,” the paper reported.
According to the paper, the identity of the brave soldier cannot be revealed over such officers security.
“The identity of the SAS soldier is being kept secret in line with Military of Defence protocol not to name members of the Special Forces. The medal will be given secretly and with no fanfare for fear of revealing the soldier’s identity,” the report added.
A senior military source in the country termed the soldier’s move as remarkable bravery.
Back home, Kenyans hailed the forces that responded to the attack for swift action as well as the manner in which they cornered the attackers.
President Uhuru Kenyatta also lauded the response which was led by DCI boss George Kinoti.
Interior CS Fred Matiang’i visited the GSU base where he congratulated gallant officers who showed their expertise and bravery in engaging the Al Shabaab gunmen.
