Embattled Egerton University Vice-Chancellor Prof Rose Awuor Mwonya has stood with the institution’s decision to build a Sh70 million gate.
The gate is among the issues the varsity’s council raise in suspending Mwonya.
She was accused of mismanaging the institution which made it suffer financial troubles.
“The plans for the construction of the gate were initiated in 2007 by the previous administration. Every year, funds were allocated for construction but the project never took off until I implemented it when I became the VC,” said Prof Mwonya.
Mwonya said the construction is not the in any way the usual gate Kenyans are used to.
“This is a complex which includes a mini supermarket for university farm produce, bookshop and security system and is almost complete,” said the VC.
Prof also dismissed involvement in the construction of an electric fence around the varsity as well as a project at Ngongongeri farm.
She said those were projects initiated during her predecessor’s tenure.
According to her, she is like Caesar’s wife; beyond reproach and above suspicion!
