Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion has directed teachers to drop the new education system, Competence Based Curriculum (CBC), and concentrate on the 8-4-4 system.
The KNUT boss noted the CBC system has been hurriedly implemented by the Ministry of Education despite numerous challenges and failure by the government to follow the legal framework for curriculum change.
Speaking in Mogotio, Baringo County during the Koibatek-Mogotio branch KNUT annual general meeting, Sossion instructed all teachers in the country to revert to the 8-4-4 system.
“We have declared with immediate effect that we are not going to teach CBC anymore. We are going to maintain the 8-4-4 system and for those who are in doubt go ask retired President Moi in Kabarak,” said Sossion.
Sossion also slammed education CS Prof George Magoha for not fully engaging teachers on the reforms in the education sector, adding that the education sector cannot succeed when teachers who are the key stakeholders are sidelined.
"We are telling Magoha that the train of education is piloted by a teacher and therefore you cannot say the train has left the station yet the teachers are left out in the name of reforms,” he said.
He further called on teachers to rally behind the union’s stand as far as the CBC system is concerned, adding that the unity of teachers is what will boost the education standards in the country.
