Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has once again welcomed the truce between President Uhuru Kenyatta and the party leader Raila Odinga reached earlier in the year.
Speaking on Radio Maisha on Monday morning, the former Nairobi senatorial hopeful said that the party has heavily benefitted from the truce and can now freely carry out its operations.
He said that using the newfound unity in parliament as a result of the duo’s good terms, the party and the entire opposition side have finally overcome their weakness in parliament to gain the power to raise its opinion and concerns.
He added that unlike at the beginning when the minority side had all its motions shot down by Uhuru’s side, it now enjoys the ruling side’s support and can have its proposals looked into and passed.
‘’ODM ni mshindi mkubwa kwa maana sasa tunaweza zungumzia mambo ambayo hapo sasa hatungeweza (we can now address issues freely),’’ he said.
The ceasefire which was secretly arrived at caught the two leaders’ allies by surprise, with all admitting that they had not been consulted.
In the opposition side, it has been termed as one of the reasons behind the fallout of leaders in the National Super Alliance (NASA) side, with Ford Kenya party leader Moses Wetangula claiming that the exclusion of the others amounts to unfaithfulness.
The others, Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi and his Wiper Democratic Movement (WDM) counterpart Kalonzo Musyoka have since joined Deputy President William Ruto in embracing the unity.
