Senator Haji says that the move will cushion Kenyans from high fuel prices.

Speaking to journalists in Garissa Town on Sunday, Haji said that Kenyans especially those in North Eastern had been hit hard by the fuel hike.

He said that the 8% proposed by President Kenyatta is reasonable.

The senator asked MPs to approve the proposal when they meet to discuss it on Tuesday and Thursday.

“The 8% is reasonable and a good balance in protecting Kenyans and at the same time ensuring development projects do not stall,” he said.

On Friday last week, the president rejected MPs Bill to suspend the 16 VAT for two years.

The president instead proposed a reduction of the VAT from 16% to 8%.

MPs are expected to convene on Tuesday and Thursday to discuss the new proposal.

The 16% VAT came into effect on September 1 and has seen fuel prices hike resulting in an increase in bus fares.

The increase has caused a public uproar with a section of politicians accusing the government of overburdening Kenyans with taxes.
