Garissa Governor Ali Korane has said that the Garissa county is likely to suffer from food shortage and water scarcity as the long rain season failed.
Korane said only a few areas in Garissa received rains but were not enough warning that the current drought situation could get worse if nothing is done.
Speaking to the press at his residence on Wednesday, Korane said there is need to come up with measures to prepare well between now and October before the situation worsens.
He said that his administration has embarked on an exercise to assess the current drought which aims at lessening drought effects.
According to Korane, the county government had already thought of re-allocating funds from different departments to the emergency kitty but stopped after the meteorological department announced that the county will receive rains during the long rains period which were expected to start in May.
“We had started this process of re-allocating the funds but when it started raining we thought that the drought problem was over only for the rains again to fail midway.”
“The reports we are receiving from the 6 sub-counties paint a bleak picture. The rains never made any impact and most of the water sources were never filled up and have started drying up. The pasture is depleting fast and soon we will be back to the drawing board,” he said.
