A 37-year-old man from Ngelani village, Mitaboni in Kathiani Sub-county of Machakos county has appealed to well-wishers to help him raise medical funds.
Henry Musembi Kitheka requires sh. 150,000 to purchase a titanium mesh that will be used to hold his skull during surgery.
Musembi on Monday told this writer that on 7th July last year he was attacked by thugs in Muthurwa, Nairobi where they hit him on the head with a blunt object.
"It was on a Saturday night at around 2100hrs I was coming from home in Mitaboni heading to my house in Kaloleni estate. I decided to pass through Muthurwa since it's walking distance," he said.
"Unfortunately I was attacked from behind by unknown people,I fell down, stayed for a couples of minutes before I gained consciousness. I woke up dizzy only to realise I had been mugged," he added.
Musembi said that after making a few steps heading home he realised he couldn't walk further. A vendor offered him a seat questioned him about what had transpired.
He reported the incident at Muthurwa police station after which the police asked a tout to escort him home.
At home, Musembi called his brother who arrived and took him to Kenyatta National Hospital. On arriving at the hospital Musembi had lost consciousness and upon examination, doctors realised that a part of his brain was swollen.
What's more, he was bleeding from his ears where a scan showed that a vein had been raptured and was leaking blood into the brain.
He was taken to the intensive care unit where doctors were able to clean the swollen part of the brain. However, they were forced to remove a part of his skull and stores it in his stomach to allow his brain to heal.
"Doctors cleaned my then swollen brain and opted to first store the part of the skull in my abdomen, so as to allow my swollen brain to heal first," he said.
Musembi spent 12 days in a coma and when he woke up not so good news awaited him.
"I was told I had to undergo another head surgery to place back that piece of skull into its place. But before then, the doctor demanded that I should first buy a 12cm by12cm titanium mesh which they'll use as a backup plan," he narrated.
This is because there is no guarantee that the piece of skull stored in his abdomen will fit again in its rightful place.
Musembi who worked as a G4S security officer says that he has been unable to go back to work or raise the needed amount whereby his eyes are on friends and well-wishers.
He said that he has held fundraising but the amount remaining is still high to foot.
"The Titanium mesh is selling at Ksh.146k at Nairobi Hospital, whereby their distributor is selling the same at a higher price Sh218,000 without tax.
"Any help will be highly appreciated. My pay bill number is 512139," he said.
