Evance Ogachi, Malindi sub-county hospital medical superintendent told the press that the decision to call off the strike was reached after Kilifi county government responded quickly and committed to pay them their allowances as per the 2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Speaking at Malindi Level 4 Hospital, Ogachi said that nurses in Kilifi county will start receiving the payments from the county government by end February.

“Nurses in Kilifi county will not be part of the nurses’ strike which is supposed to take place countrywide. This is because the Union of Nurses in Kilifi county had a sitting last week with the county government and the county government promised to pay the nurses’ allowances,” Ogachi said on Monday.

Despite Kenya National Union of Nurses listing Kilifi among the counties that will be affected by the strike, Ogachi said that nurses in the county will be on duty.

The hospital serves patients from as far as the neighbouring Mombasa County.
