Most small businesses in Kenya, especially those owned by one or two people, feel left out when it comes to the fees charged for advertising their goods and services.
It is extremely rare to see barber shop owners, jua kali artisans, plumbers, electricians, carpenters and other small-scale business owners place ads in any online platform.
This is the problem that information technology guru Seroney Memba and his five colleagues at Taffuta app are looking to fix.
Mr Memba, a young ICT graduate from Institute of Advanced Technology, and his four other colleagues, last month launched the app, which acts as a platform for small businesses to be seen and for people seeking such goods and services to easily find them.
“We created the app to assist small businesses get a platform to be seen and also enable customers easily find goods or services in their locality from reliable providers,” Memba says.
Taffuta app, downloadable from the Google Play Store, promises to conveniently help people locate businesses near them that offer services they are looking for.
And the customers can assess one’s competence by viewing past ratings before requesting the service. The app has a 5-star rating, the highest possible, on the Google Play Store.
Although the team is based in Nairobi, Memba says people are allowed to register from anywhere in the country. Memba says that the team of five is so motivated about the app, that they work as 10 people.
“In the next 3 years we shall be the must-have app for everyone with a business or offering a service and users seeking any goods or services,” he adds.
The team expects many businesses owners to sign up, because of the free visibility that businesses gain online. All that is needed is: name, email address, phone number and a password.
