Kamuti is a local name which means a spell. The incident happened on Wednesday.

Locals said Lilian Nyachae was beaten to a pulp by her mother-in-law, Pauline Kemunto. This was after Kemunto's son came home from Nairobi where he works and he never went to check on his mother.

"Kemunto was angered after her son refused to go to her house. She stormed Lilian's house in the absence of her son and clobbered Lilian accusing her of using 'kamuti' on her son," said Jeriah Mariera an immediate neighbour.

Area community policing chairman Dan Onchoke confirmed the incident saying Kemunto has been pushing her son to divorce Lilian but it has been in vain.

"Women should respect the wives of their sons. It is shameful that Kemunto decided to beat her son's wife just because her son refused to go to her house," said Onchoke.

Onchoke said Lilian was rushed to Nyamira Hospital for treatment while Kemunto has gone into hiding.

He added that Lilian's husband left home on Tuesday evening for Nairobi.
