James Onwong'a said he could not proceed to wed his long time girlfriend Stella Nyanchera because he lacked dowry.

"Nyanchera's parents were so demanding until I could not afford to pay dowry in time for the wedding which was scheduled to take place on January 26, 2019," he said.

Mr Onwong'a said he had planned to pay three cows to Nyanchera's family but her parents rejected the offer.

"Her parents wanted me to give them 5 cows and Sh50,000 on top as dowry on grounds that they invested so much money on her education. I have decided to put on hold the wedding until I get the money to buy the two cows and raise Sh50,000," he added.

Locals claimed that the decision by the groom  inconvenienced them.

"We had planned to attend the wedding and give the couple presents and blessings. The postponement caught us by a surprise," said Stephen Onkundi.

A local pastor Henry Nyabuto challenged parents to be reasonable when demanding dowry.

"Parents should stop being barriers to their sons and daughters' marriage," said the pastor.
