Etale mocked the embattled senator for mentioning President Uhuru, veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga, Interior and Coordination of National Government Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i.

Though not mentioning Wetangula's name in the post, it was clear who he was referring to.

"Someone used the names of H.E. Pres. Uhuru Kenyatta, H.E. Hon. Raila Odinga and Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiang'i to up his bargaining power.

"Many people (conmen/unscrupulous businessmen) often do that. Many people have been swindled/conned unnoticed. Now, let them dance to the music," Etale posted.

The ODM director of communication was alluding to a recorded phone call in which Senator Wetangula is heard trying to placate an man with an Arabic accent in a testy exchange.

Thanks to the recording, Wetangula has been trending on social media platforms as Kenyans weigh in on it.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has named the legislator as a person of interest.

Many arrests have already been made as investigations continue apace.

Kenya is in the spotlight over the activities of a fake gold syndicate that has been accused of swindling its unsuspecting victims of millions of shillings.

The role of Wetangula in the syndicate, if any, remains unknown and DCI investigations will seek to unravel that.
