Deputy President William Ruto on Tuesday caused a stir at the Lang’ata Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) headquarters when he showed up to register for the National Integrated Identity Management System (NIIMS) number.
There was no special arrangement for the DP and he queued like other Kenyans.
DP Ruto was accompanied by one of his sons to the registration.
Excited Kenyans kept throwing glances at the DP as others went for a handshake from Kenya’s second in command.
The DP was captured in hearty laughter as he engaged his son in what appeared like sharing jokes as the two waited in the queue.
Ruto had left tongues wagging on his stand on the number, popularly known as Huduma Namba, after he failed to show up at the Kakamega Stadium where he had been assigned by President Uhuru Kenyatta to launch the region’s registration.
This saw conspiracy theories fly online on Ruto’s stand on the registration. His supporters online urged him to give them a ‘signal’ over the namba – meaning they wanted him to declare if he was supporting it.
Central Organisation of Trade Union (COTU) secretary general Francis Atwoli went public and challenged the DP to declare his stand.
