A Mombasa-based hotel has made history by banning the use of plastic plates, spoons as well as bottles as it joins the fight against environmental degradation.
MNkafe on Monday announced that it will no longer serve its customers using plastic utensils with the managing director saying the business will remain committed to environmental conservation.
In a statement, MNkafe said: "Starting August 15th, 2018, Hotel MNkafe will not serve its customers using plastic items. We will take time to adjust to this, but we will all benefit in the long-run."
The investment's Managing Director Muhammad Nazir said the hotel will starting Wednesday serve its customers using plates and spoons made of wood as well as bottles made of glass.
He said he made the decision following a video he saw being shared on social media where the Indian Ocean is being polluted by plastic bottles and other plastic items.
"We will be using items made of only wood and glass," he said.
The government in August 28th, last year banned the use of plastic bags and so far a remarkable success has been achieved as many traders and shoppers use environmentally friendly bags.
