It is exactly one year since the October 26, 2017 repeat presidential election which was boycotted by the opposition presidential candidate Raila Odinga and gave his main rival, President Uhuru Kenyatta, whose August 8, win was nullified by the Supreme Court a win.
Since then, a lot has taken place in the local political scene with Raila now finding himself in an awkward political position in the battle for the Coast region votes amid sustained onslaught from Deputy President William Ruto who has identified the region as important part of a presidential winning machine.
During the 2017 repeat presidential poll, Mombasa and other Coastal counties which have traditionally supported the ODM leader heed to his call and majority of the voters did not vote.
But one year later, Ruto is seemingly turning the tables against the former Prime Minister as the battle for the region's over 1.6 million votes takes shape.
Ironically, for Raila, his former political lieutenants; Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa and her Msambweni counterpart, Suleiman Dori, are the ones who have set in motion the rebellion.
