A section of residents in Kisumu has given mixed reactions on President Uhuru Kenyatta's appointment of Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Okengo Matiang’i to the position of Chairman of the committee on the implementation of development programmes.

“I have no doubt about Matiang’i’s ability to carry out his new role effectively, but I see this as a plan to trim the powers of Deputy President (DP) William Ruto. The DP should be very worried,” said Willis Ouma who is among the residents of Kisumu’s Tom Mboya Estate who spoke to Hivisasa on Wednesday morning.

“I support the President for giving Matiang’i this position. The Head of State and his Deputy have other things to do. I welcome Matiang’i's appointment,” Maurine Atieno added.

“Fred Matiang’i has shown that he is capable of making things work; whether in the ICT, education or any other ministry. I am pretty sure that he will go to the ground to inspect government projects. That is what has been lacking all along,” said one Jonathan Onyango.

“Those saying that this appointment is meant to trim the powers of Deputy President William Ruto should stop cheap politics,” he added.

However, Linet Akinyi had a different opinion concerning the appointment.

“Matiang’i is already a busy man due to his work in the Ministry of Interior. I don’t think if he will effectively carry out his new roles,” she said.

The committee which Matiang'i is to head consists of all Cabinet secretaries, the Attorney General and Head of the Public Service.

This position has now seen a section of Kenyans refer to Matiang’i as Chief Minister and Prime Minister.
