The 23 died after a boat they had boarded capsized in Lake Victoria on Saturday.

In exclusive interviews in Kisumu on Sunday afternoon, residents sent messages of goodwill to the affected families.

“My heartfelt condolences to the families of the bereaved. It is very painful,” said Victor Onyango.

“I lack words to express my feelings as at now. This is not the first time death has occurred in Lake Victoria and it unfortunately won’t be the last,” said Mercy Owino.

“We share Lake Victoria with Uganda and Tanzania and what happens in the Lake definitely affects us. I am very sorry for the loss in Uganda,” said Antony Aruda.

“It happened in Uganda but this is also our loss. May the departed souls rest in peace,” said Lucy Akinyi.

Reports in a section of the Ugandan media indicate that at least 100 people were aboard the boat drinking and making merry at the time of the accident.
