Stakeholders in the hospitality industry in Nakuru County have commended Kenya Utalii College for the role the institution has continued to play in transforming the hospitality sector.

Speaking in Nakuru on Friday during the graduation ceremony for Kenya Utalii College students, Nakuru County Tourism Association vice-chair Joseph Koech said the college has transformed the hospitality sector.

He said that more than 400 hotels in Nakuru rely on Kenya Utalii College for scaling up the skills of their employees.

With Nakuru County almost becoming a city, Koech appealed to the institution to think of coming up with a branch in Naivasha to absorb the many students venturing into the field of hospitality.

“We commend Kenya Utalii College for the role it has continued to play in transforming the hospitality sector. They should now think of coming up with a branch in Naivasha to absorb the many students venturing into the field of hospitality,” he said.

He also appealed to the institution to add more courses and also offer training for hotel managers and directors so that they can be at par with the current happenings.

On his part, Kenya Utalii College Principal Hashim Mohammed stated that as an institution, they are now through with refresher courses for this year.

According to Mohammed, the courses which began in Malindi to Western and finally in Nakuru has seen approximately 1500 staff in the hotel industry trained.

He says their next area of focus will be training the managers and hotel owners on matters hotel management.

“We are now through with refresher courses training and our beginning June we shall be focusing on training the managers and hotel owners,” stated Mohammed.

Nakuru County government was represented by Gender, Culture and Social Services Chief Officer, Tumme Abduba who read the speech on behalf of Deputy Governor Dr Erick Korir.

Tumme also commended Kenya Utalii College for incorporating Human Resource Management in its training.

While stating that the course is paramount for the hospitality sector, Tume also challenged the hotel managers to ensure they take the stewards for training in order to boost the sector.

“I am delighted that one of the courses is Human Resource management which is key in the industry. I would also challenge the managers to take the stewards for training” she said.
