Oscar Sudi, the Kapseret Member of Parliament and a close ally of Deputy President William Ruto has in recent times stunned his constituents as he rocks in money, power and fame.
The businessman turned politician has been nicknamed 'Sonko of Eldoret' by the locals. His incredible rise from a charcoal seller and a makanga to a filthy rich magnate have been compared to that of DP Ruto.
The historical backgrounds of these two politicians have been explored to bring out their numerous striking similarities;
Humble backgrounds
Both DP Ruto and Sudi were raised from humble backgrounds. It is reported that DP's parents could not afford to provide daily meals for their family. While in standard Seven, it is reported that the young Ruto slept hungry on numerous occasions for lack of food. He also had to treck to and from school as his parents could not afford to pay the fare for him. In Oscar Sudi's scenario, it is said that they were squatters in Moi University scheme. Sudi has in the past testified that they used to sleep on grass thatched hut with his brothers.
They were 'hustlers' before their incredible rise
Oscar Sudi used to help his father to sell a charcoal in Kesses area before he got a job to be a conductor while DP Ruto used to sell chicken at Kamagut along Uganda-Eldoret highway to cater needs of his family as well as pay for his fees.
They came to limelight as MPs
Both Oscar Sudi and DP Ruto gained fame as Members of Parliament of their respective constituencies. In 1997, Ruto was elected MP for the then Eldoret North constituency while Oscar Sudi won the Kapseret Member of Parliament seat in 2013 general elections.
Palatial homes
It is reported that DP Ruto built a multi-billion palatial home on the outskirts of Eldoret town. Oscar Sudi too has not been left aside, last year he welcomed the DP in opening his Sh100 million house in his constituency.
