Traffic on a section of the Nairobi-Nakuru road will be rerouted from Monday. The move is meant to pave way for expansion of the busy highway.
The road isexpected to be expanded to six lanes as a way of decogesting Nairobi's Central Business District.
The road is aimed at easing traffic to and from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and around Nairobi.
The road will be complete with interchanges as well as service and bus lanes, among other features.
According to the Kenya National Highways Authority and China Wu Yi Company Ltd traffic will be diverted temporarily.
“The authority will divert traffic on the section of the road from Monday July 9. This is to facilitate the rehabilitation of the road,” KeNHA said in a statement.
The 1.2 kilometre diversion will start at Kamandura underpass in Limuru, with Nakuru-bound traffic expected to use the old Naivasha road.
The expansion is expected to cost approximately Sh1.6 billion.
China Wu Yi Company Ltd is currently upgrading the James Gichuru junction road to Rironi stretch.
Congestion on the highway has been a menace to motorists who have sometimes been forced to spend hours on the road and the expansion will come in handy.
