Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers in Malindi are investigating an incident where a 60-year-old man was on Monday night killed by a hippopotamus in Magarini, Kilifi County.
Charo Kilulu Kombo was attacked by the hippo while visiting his goats at their shade.
Speaking on phone, Jane Gitau, the Malindi and Magarini KWS director said that Kombo, who was residing at Bate in Magarini Sub-county, had heard disturbing sounds coming from the cattle that forced him to get out of his house, before being attacked by the hippo.
“The hippo was coming from the nearby River Galana, and was passing through Kombo’s homestead before killing the old man,” said Gitau on Tuesday.
Magarini chief Katana Shilingi revealed that a total of five goats and three cows from different parts of Magarini were reported to be killed by hippos on Monday.
"Hippos in Magarini especially at Kadzifitseni and Kagombani are becoming uncontrollable, exposing lives and property of the locals at risk," she said.
