It took a last-minute intervention by President Uhuru Kenyatta to dissuade Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i from penning a resignation letter, an impeccable source has revealed.

On Wednesday, the tough talking minister had given up following what he called 'maligning' of his name by senior government officials including colleagues.

"He was damn serious about it. He thinks there is a plot by even his colleagues to taint his name.

"And just on Wednesday when about to tender resignation, President Uhuru Kenyatta called and advised against the move," said the source, who declined to be named.

This comes amid local media reports that Uhuru could fire a number of ministers whose dockets are eclipsed with scandals.

While appearing at Senate, Education CS Amina Mohammed openly seemed to blame Matiang'i in what she called 'haste' acquisition of Sh3.2 billion Ruaraka land.

And similar sentiments were shared by Land CS Farida Karoney who insisted that the law was violated.

In June, Matiang'i had publicly contradicted Industrialization CS Adan Mohammed over presence of mercury in sugar. Mohammed would later be transferred to EAC docket.

Last Friday at Bobasi, Matiang'i said he would work in line with the law and would quit if 'cartels fight back'.

"We are determined to rectify the mess. I will work hard and if there is no change, then I'll have no otherwise."
