Residents of Migori County on Monday morning took to the various polling stations in the county to elect their new Senator.
The by-election is being held to fill the void left by the late Ben Oluoch Okello who died in June.
So far, the turnout has been low with various reasons being advanced for this.
A voter identified as Ibrahim Migato Ramadhan caused a stir while being interviewed by a local TV channel, after he noted that the low voter turnout was caused by voters choosing to go to the market instead of polling stations.
“You know, today is a market day. It seems most people have gone to the market instead of polling stations,” he told NTV reporter Bernard Ojwang at a polling station in Awendo Constituency.
Apart from the low turnout, voting is going on well in Rongo, Awendo, Nyatike, Suna East, Suna West, Kuria East, Kuria West and Uriri sonstituencies.
According to the 2009 national census, Migori County has a population of 917,170 people.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) statistics indicate that Migori County has 826 polling stations and 388,633 registered voters.
Major competition is between ODM’s Ochillo Ayacko and FPK’s Eddy Oketch.
