At the eve of Post-Election Violence in 2008, Deputy President William Ruto came face to face with agitated locals who mistook him for former Gusii community kingpin Simon Nyachae.
With already deaths reported at the Borabu-Sotik border, both communities were blaming each other for the chaos that robbed people their properties especially at the border town of Chepilat.
Armed militia from the Kalenjin community confronted a plane carrying Ruto, late Kipkalya Kones and Lonah Laboso, who had come to assess the destruction.
Thinking that it was Nyachae, who they had accused of unleashing outlawed Chinkororo militia on them, the armed youths aimed their arrows on the plane forcing the pilot to change course and land in Nyagacho primary on Nyamira side.
Later on, the trio could hold a joint rally involving both Abagusii and Kipsigis communities where they urged locals to declare ceasefire.
At the time, Ruto was among top ODM protagonists and supporter of Raila Odinga who would later appoint him as Agriculture minister.
The DP is not a stranger to controversy given that at some point, he was attacked by Chinkororo militia months before the hotly contested 2007 elections.
