Former Garissa County Finance Minister Idriss Mukhtar is still battling for his life in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with a bullet still lodged in his head, the family has said.
In an interview with the Daily Nation, the family says that Mukhtar who had been airlifted to India for specialised treatment has been returned back to the country.
Mukhtar was airlifted back to the country on January 21 after Indian doctors said there is nothing they can do about his condition.
According to the Indian doctors, it is too risky to remove the bullet lodged in Mukhtar’s head.
The former CEC’s family states that it has now converted one of his rooms as an ICU to take care of him.
“We have hired two ICU nurses: one for the day and one for the night. We have also hired a physiotherapist for daily sessions as we take care of him,” Mukhtar’s relative told the Daily Nation.
Mukhtar's family says that it is very expensive but they have no option.
The former Garissa Finance CEC was shot several times in his car on August 18, 2018, in Nairobi's Kileleshwa area.
A suspect who allegedly confessed to having been hired to kill Mukhtar along with his lawyer Charles Kanjama died mysteriously at the Pangani police station.
Two other suspects Mohamud Hussein and Juliet Njoki are facing attempted murder charges at the Milimani Magistrates court.
In October last year, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji said the investigation into the attempted murder is still going on.
Haji denied claims of delaying investigations and prosecution of individuals linked to Mukhtar’s attempted murder.
