Former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo has warned elected leaders against engaging in the 2022 succession debate.
In an interview with K24 TV, Kabogo hit out at a section of Jubilee leaders whom he said are only thinking about 2022 polls at the expense of Kenyans who have banked on them for an improved livelihood.
Speaking during the Daily Brief show on Thursday, the former county boss accused Deputy President William Ruto and his close allies of planning to inherit the presidency from President Uhuru Kenyatta even before he completes the first year of his second and last term.
Kabogo said by engaging in early campaigns, the politicians were committing a serious crime against the same government and noted they should be charged in a court of law for breach of allegiance.
"They started these politics the day presidential results were announced, even before Uhuru was sworn in. Anybody talking about 2022 should be charged with treason," he remarked.
Among the leaders from the Mt Kenya region who have been rallying supporters to back the DP in 2022 are MPs Kimani Ichungw'a (Kikuyu), Moses Kuria (Gatundu South), Ndindi Nyoro (Kiharu), Kanini Kega (Kieni) and Senators Kimani Wamatangi (Kiambu) and his Murang'a counterpart Irungu Kang'ata.
The former county boss further castigated Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter, a close ally of DP Ruto, for criticising the government over the recent arrests of senior officials of Kenya Power and asked him to stop politicising the war on graft.
"I am very disturbed by remarks made by my friend CS Keter that the arrests of Kenya Power managers were political. What are you telling Kenyans when you defend thieves who have put their lives at risk by procuring faulty transformers?" Kabogo asked.
A visibly furious Keter on Monday accused the police of harassing the officials, saying he was ready to carry the cross for the managers who were apprehended over the weekend following the Sh400 million scandal in the electricity distributor parastatal.
"Anything can happen to anybody. Sometimes you say, I wish I could be a sacrificial lamb for all of the officials. This is really painful, I have met and interacted with the entire team. I know them," Keter said during a press address.
