Javan Onyango of DC Mixed Secondary School in Rangwe, Homabay county, sustained the injuries while playing with fellow candidates in school on Friday evening.

Confirming the incident, Gem West Location Chief Joel Otieno said that he was accidentally killed by a fellow player who reportedly kicked him in the abdomen.

He said that the blow might have seriously affected his internal organs including his kidneys.

"Information I got was that the boy sustained serious injuries on the lower abdomen. It is suspected that someone accidentally kicked him and interfered with his kidney,” the administrator told the Standard.

The 17-year-old collapsed in the pitch and was rushed to a hospital in Rodi Kopany Township, but succumbed to his injuries at the Homabay County Referral Hospital where he was moved to on Saturday morning.

The death of the student was confirmed by Rangwe Deputy County Commissioner Elvis K'Olum who noted that the deceased died while being treated at the facility.

“The boy has been receiving medical care but it is unfortunate that he has passed on,” he is quoted.

The body has since been moved to the hospital morgue pending autopsy.
