Residents of Masimba in Kisii County spent the better part of Wednesday protesting over hiked fares.
The angry locals claimed that Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) plying Masimba-Keroka route have hiked fare on grounds that they are implementing the famous 'Michuki rules'.
Brian Ongaga who led the crowd to protest said it was unfair for the PSV operators to double fares.
"We are being forced to pay Sh100 Keroka yet we have been paying only Sh50. PSV operators must stop stealing from us," he said.
David Mogesa condemned the PSVs saying Interior Cabinet secretary Fred Matiang'i must intervene.
"Matiang'i has been pushing for the implementation of the 'Michuki rules', he must move with speed to ensure the PSV operators who have hiked fares from Masimba to Keroka are banned from operating on our roads," noted Mogesa.
Alvin Nyamote called upon residents to start use motorbikes as the alternative means of transport because matatus owners have hiked fares abnormally.
"We will have no option rather than boycotting using matatus. Matiang'i's influence must be felt now because he is the one who has been using police officers to harass PSV operators," argued Nyamote.
