The decision by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party to award direct tickets to candidates without giving an opportunity for residents to choose their favourite candidate is a mockery to democracy.
ODM Party has handed over a direct ticket to Mr Christopher Karan who is set to participate in the April 5th, Ugenya constituency by-elections locking out contestant Daniel Juma Omondi who sought another party to vie for the seat.
The party also gave Irshad Sumra a direct ticket to vie for the Embakasi South parliamentary seat in the forthcoming by-elections as reported Nation.
What beats logic is the fact that the ODM party was formed to instil democracy in the leadership of this country but in reference to what is going on democracy is lop-sided, if not outright wrong.
The ODM party leader Raila Odinga is a man of great political stature.
He embodies or seems to embody democratic ideals.
How he can turn a blind eye while his party blatantly tramples democracy on the foot baffles everyone.
In all its aspects, handing over a direct ticket is the exact opposite of democracy.
For the past three general elections, Raila Odinga has attributed his loss to clinch the presidency to lack of a level playing field.
He should consider reviewing the idea as it is totally ironical to advocate for democracy in the country when it is difficult to practise it in your own party.
