The 2022 succession politics is already taking shape as top politicians who have declared the interest in succeeding President Uhuru Kenyatta align themselves.
Several top politicians among them former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua are among those eyeing to succeed Kenyatta in 2022.
Both Kalonzo and Mutua have already hit the road running in terms of strategizing on how to woo for votes during the next polls.
As the 2022 succession politics take shape, here are four politicians who will determine whether Kalonzo becomes the next president or not:
These politicians are Kalonzo’s close advisors and confidants who are likely to lead his campaigns to the top seat.
1. Johnstone Muthama
The former Machakos senator is a political strategist and a crowd puller who will play a key role in Kalonzo’s 2022 campaigns.
According to political pundit Peter Ngure, Muthama holds Kalonzo’s key to the presidency in 2022.
Ngure says apart from Muthama’s political fame, the former senator has wealth that could in a way help Kalonzo in his push to be president.
Though Kalonzo and Muthama have often expressed their personal differences, the two are said to be close confidants.
In 2017, Muthama did not contest for any political seat.
He has since declared that he will be on the ballot for a bigger position in 2022.
2. Mutula Kilonzo Junior
He is among the youthful politicians allied to Kalonzo Musyoka.
The second term Makueni senator is also a crowd puller and has the support of women and young people.
Kalonzo will be counting on Kilonzo Junior for the youthful votes in Ukambani and other parts of the country.
3. Charity Ngilu
She is the Kitui governor serving her first term in office.
The NARC party leader is also among experienced and veteran female politicians in the country.
She was among politicians who ganged up to end retired president Daniel Arap Moi’s 24-year rule in the famous 2002's general election.
Ngilu who had fallen out with Kalonzo reconciled in 2017.
She is considered as the 'engine' for Kalonzo’s push to succeed Kenyatta in 2022.
4. Kivutha Kibwana
He is the Makueni governor serving his second and last term in office.
Kibwana has been voted among the best performing governors owing to his unique and people-centered development projects.
He is expected to lead Kalonzo’s political lobbying ahead of the 2022 polls.
Kalonzo has announced plans to rebrand his party ahead of 2022.
The Wiper Party leader says he will not sacrifice his 2022 presidential bid for anyone this time around.
