Detectives trying to unmask Monica Kimani’s killers are having a hard time dealing with Joseph Irungu, the key suspect in the murder.
To start with, Irungu alias Jowi, is a trained mercenary.
“He is a trained mercenary. A professional who knows how to deal with investigations and speaks less,” an officer privy to the goings-on said.
Another obstacle in the probe is interference from powerful state forces that are reportedly not happy with the arrest and charging of the suspect.
When he was being arrested he told police officers ‘mtajua hamjui, hakuna mahali hii kesi itaenda’.
The state forces are said to have visited the Kilimani DCI offices demanding his release.
When detectives stood their ground, the state elements sped off.
Jowi is said to have deep connections within the Jubilee political wing and was among the top security detail during the 2017 elections.
Efforts to reach Jubilee party secretary-general Raphael Tuju to shed light on how Jowi’s services were procured were futile.
There are photos of the murder suspect giving bodyguard services to ex-nominated senator Joyce Lay.
In the photos, Jowi is seen armed despite police saying he is not a licensed firearm holder.
The Saturday Standard team tried to establish where the man lives around the populous BuruBuru estate but could not locate his house as sources who know him developed cold feet.
“I moved away from that house so I cannot remember Irungu’s exact house. Actually, no one here wants to talk about him. It’s too dangerous,” a source told the paper.
There are also reports that a squad of mercenaries from abroad have pitched camp in the country and are working round the clock to prevent Irungu, a trained mercenary, from spilling the beans, the Standard says.
