Deputy President William Samoei Ruto is among the few outspoken Kenyan politicians who have publicly expressed intention to succeed the incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta upon the expiry of his term in 2022.
In light of this, DP Ruto should tread carefully lest these three things block his ambition;
1. Unresolved graft issues
It is a fact that the DP's name has been dragged into several multibillion graft scandals. Among them are Maize and Arror, Kimwarer dam scandals. Therefore, if he is to stand a better chance to succeed Uhuru, he should purpose to clear his name from these and other alleged graft scandals.
2. Political alliances
It is no secret that political alliances are an integral part of Kenya's presidential elections. In this, DP Ruto should play his cards well in determining the political alliances that will work to his favour. A single mistake in evaluating the viable options will definitely render him out of the race.
3. Unfulfilled promises
Prior to the disputed 2013 and 2017 presidential elections, Jubilee made a number of promises that are yet to be fulfilled to the electorate. As it is, citizens usually evaluate a candidate's report card before considering one for a first, second and even subsequent terms. With this in mind, Ruto should work together with his boss to ensure they fulfil all promises ahead of time. Failure, he will have nothing to sell to the electorate come 2022.
