A section of students at Moi University main campus was left angry after a suspect in the brutal murder of Ivy Wangeci pleaded not guilty to murder charges at an Eldoret court on Tuesday.
The students are worried that the move is a delay tactic that may result in evasion of justice by the 29-year-old suspect.
“There are dozens of people who saw Naftali Kinuthia murder Ivy Wangeci in broad daylight. It is therefore shocking that the suspect pleaded not guilty. The court should, therefore, ensure that justice is not delayed,” Newton Kimani, a fourth-year student at the Kesses-based institution stated.
“The suspect pleading not guilty is a delaying tactic by his defence. They are trying to make the case take unnecessarily long. We, as former colleagues of Ivy Wangeci, won’t accept such a move. We will keep the authorities on toes to ensure justice is delivered in time,” Diana Nanjala, a student at the university’s school of medicine added.
Kinuthia is alleged to have murdered Wangeci, a sixth-year medical student at Moi University, on April 9, outside the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret town.
This is allegedly after the late lost interest in him.
The incident sparked a countrywide conversation where youths were urged to learn how to handle rejection.
With the suspect pleading not guilty, it will now be up to the prosecution to provide evidence that will prove that he committed the crime.
Hearing for the case has been set for June 10 at the Eldoret High Court.
