The early morning accident, in which a  matatu collided head on with a bus after the latter lost control, occurred at Athi River in Machakos county.

Confirming the accident, Athi River OCPD Kizito Mtoro said the bus lost control on its way from Mombasa and the matatu was ferrying passengers to Kitui.

The 11 people suffered minor injuries while one is in critical condition and has been admitted at Shallom hospital in Athi River.

The survivors were treated at different health centres in the area and discharged. Eyewitness said the bus was speeding before it lost control.

The two vehicles were towed to Athi River police station.

Mtoro urged the motorists plying the route to be careful and avoid speeding. He added that passengers should speak out whenever they notice that the driver is moving too fast.

The police boss said investigations have been launched to find out what caused the accident.
