Provision of sanitary towels to girl-child learners was geared towards creating a stress-free environment in their education, Kisii county women rep. Janet Ong’era has remarked.
The rep. also cited enhancement of hygienic standards, moulding and mentorship as other objectives the national government implemented to empower the girl-child.
Launching distribution of the sanitary towels to county schools at Kereri girls’ high school on Tuesday morning, Ong’era observed that, “non-affordability of the towels and the resultant unhygienic condition stressed the girl-child learner.”
She assured the girl-child of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government represented by the area county commissioner Godfrey Kegochi and county director of education, William Sugut of creating an enabling environment for their education.
Ong’era advised the girl-child to, “take advantage of the empowerment, molding and mentorship provided to excel in the academics.”
According to the women rep, “educated girls are an asset not only to their families but to the nation and society.”
Distribution of the consignment of the sanitary towels was expected to reach rural primary and secondary schools in the county.
Absenteeism or non-concentration in learning due to lack of the hygienic towels posed a major challenge to girl-child’ education progress in some parts of the county.
The national government, however, had put in place intervention measures through Education Ministry and Affirmative Action Fund administered by the women rep aimed at tackling it.
