Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o is mourning the death of former South Nyanza County Council chairman Mzee Elisha Aketch Chieng’.

Mzee Chieng’, who was a close ally of former President Daniel Moi succumbed to cancer in Nairobi over the weekend.

In a condolence message sent via his press team on Monday, Governor Nyong’o termed the late Chieng' as an astute politician and an orator per-excellence.

“Councilor Chieng' was in the forefront of championing economic empowerment of the luo community, and was also an integral part of the growth of Homabay as a trading centre, and its final evolution into a town.

“His demise will be greatly felt in the Luo Council of Elders where he was a very active member. May the Good Lord grant his soul eternal peace,” the statement read in part.

Elisha Chieng’ succumbed to cancer at the Nairobi West Hospital on Friday aged 79. He was Moi's point man in the South Nyanza region, the modern day Migori and Homabay counties.

It is claimed that he was so powerful that any person from the region seeking to meet the former President, had to go through him.

Mzee Chieng' is set to be buried at his home in Lang'i village, Ndhiwa constituency, Homabay County.
