Wheat farmers in the North and South Rift regions are up for tough times ahead after revelations that the government had allowed for the importation of wheat from the neighbouring country, Tanzania.
This is despite the fact that already farmers in some parts of Narok have started harvesting the wheat while those in the North Rift are preparing to harvest in a few weeks time.
Addressing the press in Eldoret town after attending a farmers meeting on Monday, Moiben Member of Parliament Silas Tiren condemned the government's move which he termed as a disgrace to the local farmers.
“As I am talking, farmers from Narok are harvesting wheat and on the other hand the government is importing the same wheat from Tanzania, surely why is the government doing this to farmers?” asked the MP who has been vocal in championing for farmers interests.
The Jubilee legislator who has since been branded a rebel said the government should allow for the importation of wheat and any other agricultural products only when there is a shortage on the locally produced.
“Where will wheat farmers sell their produce to if the Tanzanian wheat is in the market at a throwaway price? We call on President Uhuru Kenyatta to act with speed and save farmers from the looming suffering," noted Tiren.
