Part of it, the most important, and sad one is his life changing accident in 1998.

On the fateful day, he was travelling to Kisumu from the Kisii Law Courts before his driver crashed into two donkeys that had suddenly emerged from the bushes chasing each other across the road.

Consequently, the driver lost control, with the car rolling, before landing on a freshly cut tree trunk.

The trunk broke the window and hit him, breaking his lower jaw and tearing into the right side of his face.

The parliamentarian was sitting on the back seat reading and did not therefore see what was happening, collapsing immediately after the first crash.

‘’I was travelling from Kisii High Court in 1998, and at Oyugis, two donkeys racing each other crossed the road out of the bush. I was at the back seat, reading and I heard a bang. I didn’t know what happened,’’ he was quoted by an SDE publication released two years back.

However, when his junior advocates whom had followed in a different car made attempts to rush him to the nearby hospital, he was suddenly back to life and ordered that he must be taken to the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu.

"(I’m told) the driver panicked. He got out of the car and started worrying that he’d killed “Mheshimiwa.” Luckily, the junior advocates who I’d left in court seeing as I was their senior, were passing by the same route,’’ he is quoted.

‘’ They quickly organized for me to be rushed to the closest hospital. But, (again I’m told), as injured as I was, I managed to regain consciousness for just a few seconds, and instructed: “Take me to Aga Khan, Kisumu!” he is further quoted.

And when they tried to explain that he could not make it due to the long distance to the city, he reiterated that he must be taken to his hospital of choice, The Aga Khan.

There, he was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for 6 days while unconscious, and spent another 30 days in the Private Wing while recovering.
