Students studying at the main Library said there was a loud bang which sent shock waves.

Learners and staff scampered to safety leaving behind books among other personal items.

It later emerged that it was a lift which had collapsed.

Scores were injured as panicky students jumped off through windows.

Sources said the lift collapsed to the ground floor causing a loud bang. The bang made students think it was an explosive.
