Deputy President William Ruto seems to have reneged on his promise to end politics as President Uhuru Kenyatta urged leaders to shun politics and focus on development.
Sources said when President Uhuru visited his deputy at his Harambee Annex office, the two leaders agreed to unite Jubilee members and stop the endless wrangles between factions opposed to the DP’s presidential ambition and those backing him.
While speaking during the African Peer Review Mechanism meeting at State House, Uhuru explained that his decision to reach to ODM leader Raila Odinga in the March 9 Handshake was not meant to hurt anyone.
“This reaching out has no political intention or a way to hurt this or the other person,” Uhuru said.
Apparently, the President was referring to concerns by the DP’s allies that the Handshake is meant to destroy Jubilee and interfere with its succession plan.
The head of state also asked leaders to stop politicking during weekends.
“Let this also be an agenda that will move from funeral and weddings because that is not where you will get an answer, an answer will come by answering talking to one another. So my brothers and sisters, find something else to do on weekends,” Uhuru said.
This was not the case, however, as Ruto and his team was on Saturday on a whirlwind tour of Kisii and Kakamega where political fireworks were released.
His allies, in their usual style, hit out at the opposition over claims it is in a witch-hunt in efforts to finish the DP politically.
Ruto himself told off Senator James Orengo over impeachment plans.
"We are very alert. Sisi ni watu tuko na radar my friends, we understand these things and don’t imagine that you can deceive us. We have a shortage of idiots and fools in Jubilee,” Ruto said.
