A-35-year old man has been lynched in Kangundo, Machakos County.
The suspected thief died after he was beaten to death by an angry mob at Kawethei village in Kangundo Sub-county on Sunday.
Kangundo police boss Benjamin Ong'ombe said the man who was not immediately identified lost his life at the scene after receiving thorough beatings from the agitated residents.
Ong'ombe said the deceased attempted to steal from a woman leading to the incident.
"He attempted to mug the lady but on pouncing on her, she screamed and raised alarm. Irate residents descended on him with blows leading to his demise," Ong'ombe said.
He said police prevented the residents from setting the man's corpse on fire.
The body was removed to Kangundo Level 4 Hospital's mortuary.
Ong'ombe warned residents against taking the law into their own hands.
He told them to follow the due procedure in dealing with crime.
"Mob justice is not justice, residents should learn to follow the law by apprehending suspects and handing them over to the police for the law to take its cause," he added.
Ong'ombe advised youths to find other means of making a living instead of engaging in crime.
"Crime doesn't pay, our youths should learn to eat their sweat because crime will either lead them to prison if not an early grave," Ong'ombe said.
