The names of President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga cropped up in Sh400 million gold scandal even as sleuths intensified investigations to the scandal.
In a leaked audio, a man believed to be Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula is heard purportedly telling a middle man for Saudi Royal that 'all is well and that Uhuru is aware of held gold consignment at JKIA'.
To make the middle man believe his story, Wetangula further tells him that 'Raila has reached Uhuru to have the gold released', adding that all is well.
But the middle man, who seems to be furious, wonders why all the bureaucracies since the Interior Minister (Fred Matiang'i), comes from Wetangula's party. Mr Wetangula insists that he should be patient.
State House spokesperson Kanze Dena denied knowledge of the audio, adding that she could not comment because she's not aware of the matter.
“I have not heard it, I have not seen it. So I cannot comment on it,” State House Spokesperson Kanze Dena told the Saturday Standard yesterday when we sought to know the role the President may have played into the gold scam investigations.
DCI George Kinoti on Thursday said Senator Wetangula, businessmen Don Bosco Gichana and Zaheer Jhanda are persons of interest and that they will be grilled.
Kinoti has warned foreigners from being lured into fake gold business. He said the cases are alarming and should be curbed to avoid further damage.
“The gold scam has now reached alarming levels as unsuspecting foreign nationals are being swindled out of large amounts of money by fraudsters,” the DCI boss said.
Senator Wetangula's aide Chris Mandu said the Ford Kenya leader is a victim, adding that he had also lost millions in the business. Dr Matiang'i is yet to address the matter.
