He hit the headlines recently when he came on the firing line of Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) which basically accused him of using obscene language in his movie narrations.
The movies in question air on Gikuyu TV daily at 10 pm and re-broadcast the following day from 1 pm. Afro has since complied with the KFCB directive.
That said, DJ Afro continues to maintain a big fan base which is unrivalled by any of the DJs in the movie deejaying industry.
It is worth noting that Afro still had this massive following which he had built over time, long before his movies started airing on Gikuyu TV.
So, what makes Afro remain at the top of his game? We outline five observations below;
Creativity
Afro is not your everyday movie DJ. His creativity is simply out of this world. Every DJ Afro-narrated movie you watch is different from the one you watched previously. This is because he keeps on reinventing his narration skills from one movie to the next.
Invented several unique words and phrases
Afro has promoted the growth street linguo through his popular narrated movies. This Afro slang is now widely used in day-to-day conversations among many.
Ability to narrate movies from different world geographies and languages
While other DJs in this category will mostly narrate American Hollywood movies, Afro will not only do that but also do Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese among other non-English movies that have become very popular among his fans.
Spearheaded the growth of movie deejaying industry
Afro can widely be credited for promoting the growth of this industry which is now putting food on the tables of those who have taken a cue from him.
Pioneered the entry of movie deejaying on mainstream media
DJ Afro was the first to have his narrated-movies air on a mainstream TV station.
The idea has apparently proved popular as other TV stations have embraced and replicated it. Apart from Gikuyu TV, Three Stones and MTN, Kenya TVs are also airing DJ-narrated-movies.
