An operation by multi-agencies targeting mobile phone sellers along Tom Mboya Street nabbed sellers with fakes phones whose estimated cost amounted to Sh3 million.

Among the agencies involved in the planned operations included the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Anti Counterfeit Agency (ACA), Anti-illicit Trade Agency, and other Security Agencies.

The agencies found out that so many fake phones are flooding the market where sellers import them from other known and unknown makes.

The sellers then change those phones' label to the known and much-trusted labels including iPhone, Samsung, Tecno, Infinix, among others, thus confusing unsuspecting buyers.

They then sell the fake phones at a cheaper price as compared to the original products bearing the same name.

This leads to original phones to overstay in shops as most buyers would go for these fake one without knowing.

The issue is said to have a negative impact on the country's economy because most of the sellers evade tax.

Some traders were arrested by the police and are expected to be charged accordingly.
